Among the winners at last night's Enjoy England Awards for Excellence was the five-star camp site Trethem Mill Touring Park in Cornwall, says JANE LABOUS My tepee is up, the barbecue is lit and I'm strolling over to pick some herbs. Here at Trethem Mill in
Cornwall, the open access herb garden is just one of the many touches which makes this camp site stand out from the rest.
It's been lovingly planted by one half of the site's owners, Jane Akeroyd, with thyme, mint, parsley, sage, oregano, chives, and rosemary. Plenty to garnish my barbecued mackerel.
It's a lovely evening on the southern Roseland Peninsula: birds are singing and the sun is setting in rosy streaks above the surrounding undulating meadows and woodlands.

Trethem Mill has Wi-fi connection and is kept utterly pristine by Jane and her husband Ian. My pitch on the top field is spacious and tidy. The tent stands on a gravel plot, which Ian says avoids mud in drizzly Cornish weather, and is surrounded by mown grass.
There's plenty of room for barbecues and picnic rugs and although there are campers on the plot next to me, we aren't in each other's pockets.
Down on the lower field things get even glitzier. Pitches have running water, electricity and even TV points which you can connect to your tent or motorhome.
I'm most impressed with the loos. Hardship is normally a pre-requisite of camping.
At Trethem Mill the bathrooms are immaculate and beautifully fitted in grey Swanstone, cream tiles and low, flattering lighting.
The shower cubicles have a separate dry section for hanging clothes and towels and lots of free hot water. There are hairdryers, individual sinks and lots of clean loos.
The information room next to reception is regularly updated by Jane, with big maps detailing walks and landmarks. There's even a book exchange.

There are sausages made in nearby Tregony and Cornish beers from Green Room Ales in Sticker, while a local fishmonger calls in every Tuesday. I manage to catch Pete, from Mevagissey, who arrives in a van loaded with fresh sardines, crab and mackerel.
Which is why I'm barbecuing oregano-infused mackerel outside my tepee on a tranquil Cornish evening. This is definitely a five-star camping experience.
