To mark the start of National Camping and Caravanning Week, NICOLA ISEARD selects some of Britain's stylish new retreats

Inshriach Yurt, Cairngorms
It's a long way from the steppes of Central Asia but you can live like a nomad on a secluded hillside above the River Spey.

On the sprawling 200-acre Inshriach private estate is a wonderfully grand yurt for two - ideal for camping.

Just opened, it boasts an original Victorian brass bed, woodburning stove and old mahogany writing table, along with table and chairs and a barbecue.

The only catch is that the shower and bathroom are 200 yards away at the farmhouse.

Fish for trout in the river, have a game of squash on the original Thirties' court located in the grounds or don your walking shoes for a ramble through the Cairngorms National Park.

Inshriach Yurt (01540 651341/www.inshriachhouse.com) from £70 per night (two sharing) in July (discounts for longer stays).

Dome Garden, Gloucestershire
The UK's first campsite devoted exclusively to "geodesic" domes, which look like mini versions of the Eden Project, is set in the beautiful Forest of Dean.

Linked by paths made from recycled glass, the 10 domes sleep either four, six or eight people and are as comfy as they are cool, with solid floors, big beds, beanbags and woodburning stoves, plus their own kitchen area and en-suite shower.

There's a pizza oven (pizza nights are Thursdays and Saturdays) and residents-only bar. Spend your days rambling, cycling and canoeing on the River Wye. Twice a day, one of the staff leads a guided cycle tour through the forest.

Dome Garden (01730 261458/ www.domegarden.co.uk) offers seven nights camping in July from £620 per dome (four sharing). Wyedean Canoe and Adventure Centre (01594 833238/www.wyedean.co.uk) offers daily canoe hire from £37 (two sharing).

Longleat Octopad and Bell Tent, Wiltshire
From August, Longleat Safari Park will be inviting visitors to camp in its grounds, within earshot of roaring lions and howling wolves.

Try the Octopad, a tent raised on a wooden floor, with one double and two single beds.

There's also the traditional canvas bell tent, with four single camp beds.

With entry into Longleat Safari Park and house included, there'll be plenty to keep the children amused, from animal spotting to getting lost in the world's longest hedge maze.

Longleat Safari Park (01985 844400/www.longleat.co.uk) offers two nights camping from £200 (four sharing).

Jolly Days, Yorkshire This new "glamping" venture opened on the edge of the Yorkshire Wolds last summer.

Jolly Days is made up of seven bell tents and seven tented lodges, set in 200 acres of private woodland.

While the tented lodges, each sleeping up to six, boast wooden floors, four-poster beds, sofas and toilets, the bell tents are more basic, with coir matting and double futon sofa beds sleeping four. There are communal showers, as well as a communal cooking hut, fire pit and clay oven. The options for day trips are endless, from picnics in the Dales to shopping in York.

Jolly Days (01759 371776/www.jollydaysluxurycamping.co.uk) offers four nights in July from £370 for four sharing a bell tent/£600 for a lodge (six sharing).

E-dens, Old Oaks Touring Park, Somerset
Cool cabin-style tents are the latest addition to the Old Oaks Touring Park near Glastonbury.

Clad in Cornish larch timber and canvas, each of the three fully insulated E-dens sleeps two and features a lockable door and sleeping area with a raised king-size bed. Go rambling through the Somerset Levels, visit Glastonbury Abbey, then return for supper on your private decking area (camping stoves available for hire).

The Old Oaks Touring Park (01458 831437/www.theoldoaks.co.uk) offers E-dens from £40 per night (two sharing) in July. Camping stove £4 per night.
