DAY OF THE LONGSHIPS
Viking River Cruises (0800 319 6660/www.vikingrivercruises.co.uk) is reinventing the river cruise with four new longships that will debut in 2012. The ships, more than 80ft longer than many competitors, will be created by the team behind the luxury Seabourn ocean cruise ships.
They combine traditional Scandinavian style with top technology including quiet hybrid engines, solar panels, free Wi-fi and organic herb garden.
Each ship is to cost more than £18million and will boast the biggest suites on Europe's rivers (the Explorer suites will have wraparound balconies).
There will be bigger cabins with more balconies.
The Aquavit Terrace on the prow has floor-to-ceiling glass doors which open its vast lounge to the balmy air and there will be an outdoor dining area. The longships will sail four of Viking's most popular European routes from next spring including two regular cruises on the Danube calling at Hungary's fascinating capital Budapest, split between Buda's historic castle area and the cosmopolitan streets of Pest.
The historic treasure of Melk with its Benedictine abbey and spectacular baroque church, and the charming Italianate old town of Passau in Germany are also fascinating stops en route.
An eight-day Romantic Danube cruise on Viking Odin from £2,195pp (two sharing), full board. Includes excursions, return flights from various UK airports and transfers. Departs Budapest, May 5, 2012.

FABULOUS FASCINOSA
Costa Fascinosa is the last ship in the £4.8billion expansion of Italian line Costa Cruises (0845 351 0552/www.costacruises.co.uk). Its spring launch takes the fleet to 16 and Fascinosa will feature aspects of the four other 3,000-capacity Concordia-class ships including outdoor pool with giant cinema screen and a retractable glass roof.
Sister ship Costa Favolosa, launched in July, boasts an Asian-themed Samsara spa which the Fascinosa will also have. The wellness centre has cabins offering direct access to the spa. There will be a water park on deck and both will have a 4D cinema, PlayStation World and hi-tech golf simulators.
In summer it will cruise the eastern Mediterranean from Venice taking in classic stops such as Dubrovnik and Greek islands Santorini and Rhodes.
A seven-night Italy, Greece and Croatia cruise on Costa Fascinosa from £969pp (two sharing), full board. Includes return flights from Gatwick.
Departs Venice, May 21, 2012.

LUXURY EXPERIENCE
Celebrity Reflection will be the latest addition to Celebrity Cruises (0845 456 0523/www.celebritycruises.co.uk) late next year. As with Solstice-class sister ship Silhouette launched last month, fine dining will be a big feature and includes the Lawn Club Grill where guests can even grill their own meat.
One exciting innovation is the Alcoves, eight cabana-style private retreats offering Wi-Fi.
Reflection's AquaClass suites offer unlimited spa access and exclusive use of Blu restaurant.
Take coffee in The Hideaway, with its tree house, or try the art studio if you're feeling creative.
Its first winter will be spent in the Caribbean sailing from Miami to destinations such as San Juan, Puerto Rico with its old walled city and you can enjoy superb beaches at Philipsburg, St Maarten; or try trekking in the rainforest of St Kitts.
A nine-night East Caribbean fly-cruise on Reflection from £1,258pp (two sharing), full board. Includes return flights from Heathrow, transfers and pre-cruise hotel stay. Departs Miami, December 5, 2012.
