Final votes are being cast to establish the new seven wonders of nature. LIZ BIRD picks out some favourites from the global shortlist
1. KOMODO, INDONESIA
Best known for the eponymous dragon, the world's largest lizard, this Unesco World Heritage Site is home to an array of other wildlife.
The island's surrounding waters are rich in marine life with more than 1,000 species of fish, dugong (sea cows), turtles, sharks, whales and dolphins. A local ranger accompanies tourists because the dragons are capable of inflicting serious wounds.
Audley Travel (01993 838100/www.audleytravel.com) offers a 15-day tour of Indonesia combining Bali, Flores and Komodo from £3,010pp (two sharing), B&B. Price includes return flights from Gatwick, transfers and some guiding.
2. MASURIAN LAKE DISTRICT, POLAND
You'd be forgiven for thinking you were looking at Amazonia when you see aerial photographs of this area.
Known as the Land Of A Thousand Lakes, it's an outdoor enthusiast's heaven with sprawling forests and vast stretches of water connected by rivers and canals.
It's not short of pretty villages and history either: Swieta Lipka has a picturesque 17th-century Baroque church; Olsztyn boasts a 14th-century castle; while Gierloz is home to the ruins of the Wolf's Lair, Adolf Hitler's Second World War bunker, now a museum.
One of the best ways to explore is on a bike tour with Baltic Holidays that begins in Warsaw and includes kayaking along the Krutynia River.
Baltic Holidays (0845 070 5711/www.balticholidays.com) offers an eight-night tour from £1,120pp (two sharing), half board (B&B in Warsaw), including return flights from Heathrow, sightseeing tour of Warsaw and transfers. Departures from May, 2012.
3. JEJU ISLAND, SOUTH KOREA
Manchester United star Ji-Sung Park has been championing his home country's finalist in the competition, a volcanic island known locally as Cheju-do.
Dominated by South Korea's highest mountain, 6,398ft Hallasan, it is overflowing with lava formations, spectacular waterfalls, sandy beaches and citrus groves. One of the highlights is the 72ft Cheonjiyeon Waterfall where you can walk across an arched bridge featuring carvings of seven nymphs; local legend has it that they descended from heaven to bathe in the cascade's pool.
Hike one of Hallasan's five walking trails for panoramic views of its crater lake.
Royal Caribbean International (0844 493 2061/www.royalcaribbean.co.uk) offers a nine-night Pearls Of The Orient fly-cruise on Voyager of the Seas from £1,849pp (two sharing). Price includes return flights from Heathrow, transfers, one night in Shanghai (B&B) and a sevennight cruise (full board) also calling at Kobe and Nagasaki. Departs July 7, 2012.
4. CLIFFS OF MOHER, IRELAND
Looming 700ft above the Atlantic, this dramatic coastline in County Clare is a birdwatcher's paradise with puffins, razorbills and kittiwakes in abundance.
An underground cave in the modern visitor centre houses the Atlantic Edge display that explores the different elements which have shaped the sheer limestone cliffs.
If you want a closer look at this protected Unesco Geopark Site you can book guided nature walks or boat trips from nearby Doolin or just stroll along the cliffs yourself.
Travelsphere (0844 567 9966/ www.travelsphere.co.uk) offers an eight-night escorted Irish Rail Trail from £789pp (two sharing), including some meals, a guide and some excursions. Departures from May to September, 2012. Also includes three nights in Dublin plus Cork and Killarney, Galway and the Ring of Kerry.
5. JEITA GROTTO, LEBANON
This labyrinth of crystallised limestone caves, 12 miles north of Beirut, is full of cathedral-like vaults and a lower cave through which a half-mile river runs.
It's also home to one of the biggest stalactites in the world, hanging around 26ft. The attraction is usually combined with other Lebanon highlights such as the Unesco-listed Roman ruins at Baalbek and the Phoenician port of Byblos with its Crusader Castle.
The tour begins and ends in cosmopolitan Beirut, once known as the Paris Of The East thanks to its chic cafes, restaurants and nightclubs.
Trailfinders (0207 368 1200/ www.trailfinders.com) offers a six-night escorted Land Of The Phoenicians tour from £979pp (two sharing), B&B. Price includes return flights from London Heathrow. Departs March 18, 2012.
