PALOME HOTEL, ARINSAL, ANDORRA

Andorra might not be known for its luxury but this chic four-star hotel in Arinsal, all exposed stone walls, brushed steel and concrete, certainly is.

Located a mile from the slopes, all 35 rooms and suites have sleek wood floors, stylish furniture, funky lighting and wonderful mountain views.

The skiing's not bad either, with excellent beginner and intermediate runs (experts should head to neighbouring Ordino-Arcal­s, which shares a lift pass) and great snow cover.

After a hard day's skiing have a cocktail in the bar before enjoying top-notch international cuisine in the restaurant.

THE MOOSER, ST ANTON, AUSTRIA

This ski-in, ski-out hotel tops the list of places to stay this season.

Built by the owners of the world-famous MooserWirt apres-ski bar and due to open this month, it is perched above the village of St Anton.

Mixing rustic Tyrolese style with contemporary design, it features 17 elegantly furnished double rooms and suites, a heated outdoor infinity pool and a spa, with sauna, steam room and treatments.

The resort is an experienced skier's paradise, with countless challenges on and off-piste including tricky black runs, steep narrow gullies, bump runs and off-piste trails.

LE PORTETTA, COURCHEVEL 1650, FRANCE

Sitting on the nursery slopes in Courchevel 1650, popular for its wide, perfectly groomed pistes and free-riding spots in the vast Three Valleys ski area, this is one of the most striking hotels in the French Alps.

As well as 38 double rooms and six, two and three-bedroom stylish lofts (complete with balconies and open log fires), it has two restaurants, a spa, ski rental shop and, new this season, a stunning outdoor terrace bar, Fire & Ice.

THE OMNIA, ZERMATT, SWITZERLAND

Accessed via an underground tunnel, this mountain lodge, built on a rock 150ft above the roofs of central Zermatt, has serious wow factor.

Step inside and you'll find 30 chic bedrooms and suites, all with breathtaking valley views.

The hotel boasts a fine-dining restaurant serving modern Swiss cuisine, a wellness area with indoor and outdoor pools, sauna, Turkish bath and massage rooms.

It's also just a short walk from Zermatt's three main lifts.

Ski to the Italian resort of Cervinia for a day using the lift pass which covers the whole area or try the Matterhorn ski safari where you descend a total of 10,000m without skiing the same slope or taking the same lift twice.
