HAVE A FIELD DAY An event that takes the big orchestra out of the stuffy concert hall and into the great outdoors is taking place in the Somerset countryside this month.
Orchestra In A Field (01749 813025/www.orchestrainafield.com) is held in the parklands of Glastonbury Abbey, right, on the weekend of June 30 to July 1.
This year's main concerts will be Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition on the Saturday, and Bizet's Carmen the following day.
The inspiration of Somerset-based conductor Charles Hazlewood, the event also features a performance of Mike Oldfield's Seventies classic Tubular Bells. Weekend ticket (including camping) from £65 (£40 under-18); day tickets from £36/£20.

CYCLE OF LIFE
We all dream of escaping the daily grind. Few put it into practice.
Writer Mike Carter pondered what it would be like to cycle to the office and just keep on pedalling. Five thousand miles later, he'd completed a circumnavigation of Britain, from Margate to the Moray Firth, Cape Wrath to Cardiff.
His experiences have been distilled into One Man And His Bike (Ebury Press, £7.99), a humorous and life-affirming account that showcases our island's rich diversity and eccentricities.
